CONN-NAHRO 2012 JOHN J. KELLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
NOTICE TO
CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS AND
CURRENT UNDERGRADUATE COLLEGE STUDENTS
CONN-NAHRO AWARDS THREE (3) $3,500 SCHOLARSHIPS EACH YEAR to aid persons living in CONN-NAHRO member sponsored communities who, without this assistance, would not be able to attain higher education or to escape their low economic status. The Scholarship will be administered by a committee appointed by CONN-NAHROresponsible to award scholarships.
Who Is Eligible To Apply?
All persons who have been accepted into a two (2) or four (4) year institution of higher learning working toward a full-time Associate or Bachelor Degree beginning in September, 2012, and
- Who reside in or are assisted with their housing by a CONN-NAHRO agency member, and
- Who are residents in good standing.
When Can I Apply?
Applications will be available on the CONN-NAHROwebsite and will be mailed to member agencies at the end of April 2012.
When Is My Application Due?
Applications will be accepted until 12:00 p.m. on June 8, 2012 by the Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee.
Where Do I Submit the Application?
The Executive Director/CEO of your CONN-NAHROmember agency will submit your completed application and attachments to:

CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
PURPOSE:To aid individuals who live in CONN-NAHRO member public housing authority communities or Section 8 housing whom, without this assistance, would not be able to attain higher education or to escape their low economic status.
AUTHORITY:The Scholarship will be administered by a committee appointed by CONN-NAHROresponsible for awarding scholarships in the amount of $3,500.00 each for the first year of college.
ELIGIBILITY:All persons who have been accepted into a two (2) or four (4) year institution of higher learning working toward a full-time Associate or Bachelor Degree beginning in September, 2012. Candidates must be a resident in good standing and reside in a CONN-NAHRO agency member sponsored community during the previous twelve (12) months. The community may be a conventional public housing development or a Section 8 assisted apartment.
CRITERIA:The applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Candidates must be eligible for high school graduation in June, 2012 or have a high school diploma or GED.
- Candidates must attain at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during their four (4) years of high school or, under certain circumstances, at least a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during their senior year.
APPLICATION:The application must be complete. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The application must have the following documents:
1. Completed 2012 John J. Kelly Memorial Scholarship Application Form.
- A written recommendation from the Executive Director/CEO or Designee from
applicant’s CONN-NAHROmember sponsored community. MUST BE A
SIGNED ORIGINAL DOCUMENT OR ELECTRONIC SIGNATURE ONLY.
- The applicant’s high school transcript, including all SAT scores.
- Three(3) letters of recommendation, in additionto the Executive Director/CEO’s
recommendation. MUST BE A SIGNED ORIGINAL DOCUMENT OR AN
ELECTRONIC SIGNATURE ONLY.

- An essay of 250 to 500 words on one (1) of the following subjects:
- How has living in public/assisted housing influenced you?
- Pick an experience/person from your own life and explain how it or he/she has influenced your development.
- A list of the applicant’s accomplishments, including awards, honors, sports,
community service, extracurricular activities, employment, etc.
- The names of the institutions to which the applicant has applied and has been
accepted. A copy of each acceptance letter must accompany the application.
8. Proof of Financial Aid and any other sources of assistance to be received. (Must submit by June 15, 2012)
ADMINISTRATIVE CONSIDERATIONS:Each CONN-NAHROmember agency may submit up to ten (10) applications in total for both high school seniors and current college students. The Executive Director/CEO/Designee is responsible for verifying all application requirements and collecting all application material. The application must be submitted by the housing agency, not the applicant.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
30 points Need.
25 points Essay content.
20 points High school grades, Class rank and SAT scores.
25 points Work experience, Extra curricular activities and Community service.
5 points Never awarded CONN-NAHRO scholarship in past.
DEADLINE:The application must be received in the offices of the scholarship chairperson: Michelle Molina - J. D’Amelia & Associates before 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2012.
FUNDING:Award will be funded by September 1, 2012. CONN-NAHROreserves the right to revoke the scholarship and demand repayment of the scholarship if the recipient does not attend college in the Fall of 2012, as a full-time student.

The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Conn NAHRO scholarships. Each will receive $3,500 to assist with their college expenses. Two of the individuals graduated from high school in the spring of 2011 and the third recipient will be entering her fourth year of college. BIOGRAPHIES OF 2011 CONN NAHRO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
EMILY CHIARELLI: 
Emily was born on June 7, 1993 to Joseph and Christine Chiarelli as Emily Rose Chiarelli and has lived in Milford her whole life. She just recently graduated from Jonathan Law High School. She participated in the Meadowside Elementary School Mentoring program. She has worked for over one year as a bus girl at a high end Italian restaurant called Gusto Trattoria in Milford, CT. Emily has always had a great number of friends and values her relationships with her friends and family more than anything else. Emily says she has a passion for rock and roll music and has enjoyed playing the violin since I was 9 years old. Writing is another passion of hers and she will be studying professional writing at York College of PA in the fall. She is very excited about her future and can't wait to see what the next few years will hold for her.

Ahmed graduated from Enfield high school with a class rank of 5 out of 223, having been on the honor roll throughout his high school career. He served as Class President during his sophomore and junior years, has been a member of the Student Council, the Latin Club, the Math team, the Science Club, the Science Olympiad and as Coach/Captain for the Unified Sports Club.
He has a passion for government and social justice so has served for two years as Town of Enfield Youth Council Co-President. He has spoken on panels with legislators on issues impacting youth and families in poor economic times and on the value of education. In that capacity he has been involved with Peace Jam, a social justice program, which connects youth with Noble Peace Prize Laureates to create a local project in social justice. He served on the state SERC Youth Advisory Council and as a youth facilitator for the NAMES Can Really Hurt Us Program. He also served as a youth representative on the Mayor’s Advisory Council.
He has volunteered in AmeriCares Home Front, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Johnson Memorial Hospital, the Enfield Youth Vote, the Enfield Street School Field Day and the Student Educational Resource Center.
Ahmed will attend the University of Connecticut , majoring in mathematics. He plans to enroll in a pre-med program to become a cardiologist. Ahmed said “I am a simple guy who enjoys life for its unpredicted adventures.â€
MICAELA K. WERMAN: 
Micaela lives in Wallingford with her mother and brother and currently attends Central CT State University, where she will be a 4th year student in Mechanical Engineering. She has a deep interest in math and physics and the way machines and structures work. Micaela has worked at Holiday Cinemas for almost five years enabling her to pay for her personal expenses and college fees. She belongs to the CCSU Chapters of Habitat for Humanity, the Helicopter Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Micaela volunteered during high school teaching Sunday School at a Hamden church and enjoys figure skating.
CONN NAHRO and the Scholarship Committee Members congratulate Micaela, Ahmed and Emily and wish them much success with their educational goals.
